Pia mater

The innermost of the 3 meninges that cover the CNS, the pia mater is a thin fibrous tissue that is intimately connected to the surface of the brain (you cannot peel the pia mater off the surface of the brain).  The pia mater is impermeable to fluid, so there is no exchange between the CSF in the subarachnoid space and the brain.
