Squamous Part of the Temporal Bone

The squamous part of the temporal bone is the thin, flat, lateral aspect of the temporal bone. Squamous comes from 'squama' in Latin which translates to 'scale' meaning that this side of the bone is smooth and scale-like, in contrast to the rough petrous part.
