Petrous Part of the Temporal Bone

The petrous part of the temporal bone is the rough, thickened, medial part of the temporal bone. Petrous come from 'petra' in Latin which translates to 'rock' meaning that this side of the bone is 'rocky' or rough, in contrast to the smooth squamous part.
