Literally “little brain”. An important motor area of the brain, the cerebellum does not initiate movement but is important in the coordination and fine-tuning of movements. This is accomplished through the “comparator function” of the cerebellum, which compares actual movements (based on sensory input) with intended movements (through motor output), and then adjusts motor output to best match actual movements with intended movements. The folds of the cerebellum are called folia (singular folium)
