One of the 4 paired muscles of mastication, the temporalis m. is a broad, relatively thin muscle that originates in the temporal fossa of the skull and inserts into the coranoid process of the mandible. All 4 muscles of mastication are innervated by a motor branch of CN V3 (the mandibular n.). The action of the temporalis m. is elevation of the jaw, and retraction (or retrusion) of the jaw. Retraction of the jaw is the movement that pulls the jaw posteriorly, while protraction (or protrusion) of the jaw is the movement that pushes the jaw anteriorly.
