A slender muscle in the neck that runs along with the posterior belly of the digastric m. The stylohyoid m. attaches superiorly to the styloid process, and inferiorly to the hyoid bone (thus the name). Near its attachment to the hyoid bone the tendon of the stylohyoid bifurcates, and the intermediate tendon of the digastric muscle passes through the split. The stylohyoid m. is innervated by the facial n. (CN VII), and its action is to elevate the hyoid and draw it posteriorly.
