Soft palate

The soft palate is a soft-tissue extension of the hard palate that ends with the uvula.  As part of the swallowing reflex the soft palate stiffens and swing superiorly, closing off the nasal cavity from the pharynx.  This prevents food and liquid from entering the nasal cavity during swallowing.
