Carotid canal

The passage through the temporal bone through which the internal carotid a. and the carotid nerve plexus pass.  Externally, the canal starts at the carotid foramen, and then makes two 90-degree turns and passes through the cavernous sinus before emerging into the cranial cavity.  The roof of the carotid canal is the foramen lacerum.
