Superior tarsal m

A small smooth muscle in the upper eyelid that is active tonically to help keep the eyelid open.  It originates from the deep surface of the levator palpebrae superioris and inserts into the tarsal plate of the eyelid.  The superior tarsal m. is innervated by sympathetic fibers from the superior cervical ganglion.
