Cruciate ligament

The cruciate ligament is a cross-shaped ligament that holds the dens (odontoid process) of the axis (C2 vertebrae) against the atlas (C1 vertebrae).  The figure below is a posterior view of the spinal canal with the lamina of the vertebrae removed.  The cruciate ligament covers the dens.
