Ophthalmic v

The superior and inferior opththalmic vv. drain the orbit, terminate at the cavernous sinus, and are part of venous networks that drain blood from the face.  

Because of the arrangement of the veins and the flow of blood, it is possible for an infection of the face to spread through the ophthalmic vv. and into the cavernous sinus.
