At Waitara High School, we are proud to work with the students and whānau of Waitara to develop active and inspired learners who feel a strong sense of belonging and connectedness to their community and who believe in themselves.
A core part of this journey includes the choices that students make as they enter the formal qualifications stage of their schooling. NCEA Levels 1-3 unlock doors to many exciting opportunities.
Students and whānau are invited to read the course information here and talk with the teaching staff to decide which options are best for them before choosing their options towards the end of Term 3.
Year 9 students study: He Kaakano OR Foundation, Science (as part of Foundation) + 2 options *These choices will take place after a taster course of each option available during the first part of Year 9.
Year 10 students study: He Kaakano OR Core subjects (Literacy, Math, Science, Health & PE) + 2 options
NCEA Level 1 students study: English AND/OR Te Reo Māori, a Math, a Science + 3 options
NCEA Level 2 students study: 6 options
NCEA Level 3 students study: 6 options
For students who opt into a STP Trades Academy, a 3+2 programme or have a particularly academic load in Year 13, we will tailor a course to suit. It is recommended that students on Trades Academy will take 4-5 subjects and students on 3+2 take 3-4 subjects.
The school will make every endeavour to give you your choices but there may be some timetable clashes which might mean that you won’t be able to get your first choice.
Some advice -
· If students have not yet decided on their career pathway, they should keep their option choices broad.
· If university, or many of the degree options that are available through WITT, is even only a maybe in the future of your student, it is important that students select at least THREE University Entrance Approved subjects - these are marked with an * in the course title below.
All of the courses that we offer are listed below. They are loosely grouped together by learning areas. Learning areas are groups of subjects that relate to each other. To find out more about a course, simply click on the button with its course code on it. To return to this page, click on WHS options in the top left corner.
These courses are aimed at students in Year 9 and 10 as well as students with additional high learning needs. These courses are where all learning starts at Waitara High School.
