12CHEM
NCEA Level 2 Chemistry
NCEA Level 2 Chemistry
Chemistry at this level is about learning different types of substances and the ways they interact with each other through various chemical reactions and physical processes. Students will also learn laboratory techniques to determine the chemicals in a substance and the amounts in them.
Qualitative analysis (INTERNAL: 3 credits): water sample testing
Redox chemistry (INTERNAL: 3 credits): reactions involved in the transference of electrons
Quantitative analysis (INTERNAL: 4 credits): testing the amount of a selected chemical in a commercial product.
Structure and bonding (EXTERNAL: 5 credits): Types of substances
Four achievement standards are used to assess learning. Three are internally assessed (10 credits) using a combination of practical and written work. The last one is externally assessed (5 credits) in the end-of-year NZQA examinations.
Credits Available:
Internal - 10
External - 5
Total - 15
Further study of Level 3 Chemistry and some of the courses offered in tertiary institutions that require 12 or more Level 2 Science credits.
Minimum 12 credits gained in NCEA Level 1 Science, with at least 4 credits from external examinations
No special equipment is required for this course other than general stationary and a Scientific Calculator.
