NCEA Level 3 Chemistry
Chemistry is essential for anyone considering a science or a health related degree at the tertiary level. It is an approved subject for University Entrance. In Year 13, Chemistry involves practical and theoretical work to help the learner make further sense of the world of matter around us by deepening the knowledge learned from Year 12.
Redox chemistry (INTERNAL: 3 credits): Chemical cells
Quantitative analysis (INTERNAL: 4 credits): Water sample analysis
Spectroscopic data analysis (INTERNAL: 3 credits): Distinguish different organic compounds
Organic Chemistry (EXTERNAL: 5 credits): Study of compounds with carbon backbones
Four achievement standards are used to assess learning. Three are internally assessed (10 credits) using a combination of practical and written work. The last one is externally assessed (5 credits) in the end-of-year NZQA examinations.
This subject is UE endorsed.

Chemistry is a basic requirement for majority of Science and health related degrees at University and also some trades and other courses offered in polytechnics.
A minimum of 10 credits from NCEA Level 2 Chemistry or at the discretion of the learning leader of Science.
No special equipment is required for this course other than general stationary and a Scientific Calculator.
