NCEA Level 3 History
NCEA Level 3 History
In this course we will look at the impact of colonisation and the Treaty of Waitangi on New Society specifically in the local area. An understanding of the Treaty is a prerequisite for almost any job in or related to the public service sector, and this includes nursing, law, journalism, planning, teaching and many other roles.
We will look at the impacts on a personal, relational, social, economical and political level. If you didn't know that New Zealand was nearly colonised by France or the USA, you need to take this course. If you see a problem with how Maori were depicted in the image below, you need to take this course.
Term 1: CONTENT ONLY - early encounters between Maori and Europeans - preceding the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi e.g. the Declaration of Independence through to the aftermath.
Term 2: Research (4 credits) - students frame and conduct their own inquiry into a Aotearoa based historical event interpreting independently selected sources. At Level 3, they're also required to think about the historian's context and its influence on their work. This includes an examination of how the source fits into the historiography as a whole. They then turn what they found out into their key historical ideas report (4 credits).
Term 3: Students examine big questions around contested events - what makes them contested? They also look at how a perspective is constructed. They gather evidence for TWO DIFFERENT perspectives to do with their research topic or another topic covered in class, students use this for their perspectives assessment (4 credits). They analyse for validity, gaps and ultimately deciding which is of more value to their event.
Term 4: External preparation: students will prepare for the source interpretation exam.
Credits Available:
Internal: 15
External: 4
Total: 19
This course is a University Entrance approved subject, the career possibilities are endless:
As a lot of historical sources have now been digitised, your job will be to ensure your chromebook is charged and with you for every lesson. A clear file (40 pockets) is also of value but not mandatory.
