He Kaakano is a bilingual unit that is made up of Year 9 & 10 students. It follows the New Zealand Curriculum Framework which sits under the umbrella of the Year 9 Foundation program.
One main purpose is to accommodate students who have been in a bilingual or a ruumaki unit prior to attending Waitara High School. He Kaakano is also for those students who attended mainstream schools and have the passion to learn Te Reo Maaori me oona Tikanga outside of the Te Reo Maaori option classes.
As part of the He Kaakano program, it is compulsory that Te Reo Maaori is selected as an option at Year 9 & 10 and it is also compulsory that one club is Kapa Haka or Maaori Performing Arts. It is encouraged that students participate in the competitive Pae Rangatahi Kapa Haka.
Students who enrol into He Kaakano are highly relied upon when it comes to poowhiri, whakatau, performing, teaching and so much more.
Through each of the overarching kaupapa sits comprehensive and engaging units of work that align with literacy, numeracy & Social Studies:
