NCEA Level 3 English

Introduction

All truly great texts have a comment to make on society. At Level 3, we dive into how critical comments on humanity in texts transcend time and context. We look at why are humans slow learners? Why do directors and authors have to keep producing content critiquing ideas that should have been outlawed decades ago? Well in this course we look at why and how this happens. Decisions around how to portray something often say a lot more than the idea itself.

Course OutlineĀ

Term 1 - Close viewing: a comparison of 2 scenes from 2 different films by the same director or from the same genre. The students produce this assessment as a podcast or if they choose to write an essay they complete a visual essay (6 frame static image) based on one of these films. In 2023, this was based on civil rights stories: Robin Bissell's "The Best of Enemies" and Peter Farrelly's "Green Book".

Term 2 - Othello: a deep dive into the original psychological thriller. Manipulation, deceit, betrayal and misplaced trust prove that "all that glitters is not gold." This text is used to complete research into critics as well as material for both the written text external and writing portfolio.

Term 3 - Writing portfolio, preparation for external examinations.

Term 4 - Examination preparation/completing remaining internal assessments.

Credits available:

Internal up to 16

External up to 8

Total: up to 24
