Year 10 Literacy
Introduction
This course involves skills that underpin both Social Sciences as a whole and English as a subject. It asks students to think deeply about historical and geographical issues and make connections about the effect that has had on the world around them. This is all done alongside regular reading and writing practice. The job of this course is to show students how they, and Waitara, fit in the larger context of global history and events/trends.
Course Outline
Term 1: Child Labour (Blackbirding and Child Labour in the chocolate industry)
Testing will also take place for:
AsTTle writing, AsTTle reading, PAT reading
Term 2: World War II (including Waitara's involvement)
There is an opportunity for those who are ready to sit the new NCEA Literacy Tests (one is reading and one is writing)
Testing:
Mid year AsTTle reading
Term 3: Treaty of Waitangi and its consequences for Taranaki
Term 4: Research into social action
There is an opportunity for those who are ready to sit the new NCEA Literacy Tests (one is reading and one is writing)
Testing:
end of year AsTTle writing, AsTTle reading, PAT reading
Where this course can lead
This course develops skills in the Humanities area of the curriculum as well as Literacy skills. Some of the specific subjects it can help with are listed below:

Geography
English
Economics ( available through Kotui Ako and Te Kura)
Travel and Tourism
If you want a career in a museum, the tourism sector, teaching, public service or law then this course is important for you to engage in.
Prerequisites & Equipment
The work in this course is set through Google Classroom. It is vital that chromebooks are charged and with the student every Literacy lesson.
