NCEA Level 1 History
NCEA Level 1 History
“If you don’t know your history, you’re doomed to repeat it.” History is, according to a former WHS student, "the timeline of humanity." In this course, we will look at some of the major social, political struggles of the 20th Century that have shaped New Zealand society, including the histories that have impacted Waitara. In 2025, this class looked at the participation of Maori at Gallipoli and the 1981 Springbok Tour in depth.
Term 1:
Key Learning: History skills and learning the terminology, WW1 and Gallipoli.
Assessment: Research using primary sources (5 credits) - Students use a mixture of teacher-provided and individually gathered primary sources to answer an inquiry question. They consider and analyse the sources for their usefulness and reliability. This pushes students to consider historical evidence and develop source interpretation skills.
Term 2:
Key Learning: Students learn exactly what historical significance is and how can we use it to consider the value of events, people, and/or places from the past. Students will apply these ideas to someone or an event they deem historically significant.
Assessment: Students prepare a significance report (5 credits) based on their chosen figure or event
Term 3:
Key Learning: Students learn what a perspective is, how they are influenced by our values and beliefs, and how these impact our actions. Students will use their prior learning to select their perspectives for assessment.
Assessment: Students complete an exam paper where they must demonstrate their understanding of differing perspectives arising from a historical context.
Term 4: External preparation: students will prepare for the historical concepts exam (5 credits). NB, this exam is optional.
Internal: 10
External: 5 (plus optional 5)
Total: 15 (plus optional 5)
"The more you know about the past, the more prepared you are for the future."
This course is a University approved subject, which means it can help you to achieve University Entrance Literacy at Level 2 and can help you obtain University Entrance in Level 3. The possibilities are endless:
As a lot of historical sources have now been digitised, your job will be to ensure your chromebook is charged and with you for every lesson. A clear file (40 pockets) is also of value but not mandatory.
