Hop High Ladies

West Virgina fiddler John Morris in the parking lot at a festival. (Poor video warning!)

Square tune. Key of G usually.. Two parts. Many names such as, "Did you ever see the devil, Uncle Joe?"

  • Honey Holler from Ashville NC [utoob] at a farmers market singing Hop High Ladies.
  • Jay Ungar etc with Ira Bernstein clogging [utoob] to McCleod's Reel but they medley to Chinquapin Hunting. We hate medleys.
  • Benten Flippin & Paul Brown playing Hop High Ladies at a jam filmed by BanjoJudy [utoob].
  • Cigar fiddle [utoob] and singing Uncle Joe. Go to 2:50 to skip all the talking.
  • Good jam session [utoob] to Did you ever see the devil, Uncle Joe?

Not to be confused with...

Some people call it "Hop High Ladies" but that can be confused with "Hop High," a different tune with different words. This tune is called "Uncle Joe" or "Did you ever see the devil, Uncle Joe?", or "Did you ever go to meeting, Uncle Joe?" and these names have the advantage of matching the lyrics. This tune is apparently derived from, or is the same as, the much older "Miss McLeod's Reel," also known as "Billy Boy."
