Sorry for the lack of posts recently. We've been busy helping Father Damien to make plans for his first public Mass since COVID-19 closed all the churches. The government announced that public worship could begin again from 4th July (tomorrow) and said that guidance on how to do it safely would follow. When it eventually came it was so complicated, with so many cross-references to other guidance documents and so far removed from the actuality of a real church service that it was almost incomprehensible - and failing to take the necessary precautions could be a criminal offence (or maybe not: that's also unclear!). He's got it sorted, we think, so that there will be just one Mass on Sunday - the early morning one, which is always less popular. Cleaning the church between services is going to be difficult to organise, with the members of the cleaning rota all being over 70. So most people are going to be encouraged to continue with watching the online streaming instead. There'll be no singing and half the pews have been removed to ensure social distancing. We always have a one-way system for communion, which is fortunate, but people will have to be very disciplined about not queuing too close together while they're waiting. Peter and I have agreed to come to help with the stewarding. I think Damien thinks that an ex-policeman will be able to speak with more authority than he does!
On another note altogether, Liverpool went down 4-nil to Manchester City last night. I suppose you can't expect the lads to pull out all the stops when they've already won the league, but I was hoping for something a bit less humiliating than that! I hope they can do better against Aston Villa on Sunday.
