Stella was at the carol service his morning. She seemed surprisingly composed when we arrived, but she left during the last-but-one carol (It Came upon the Midnight Clear) because it was all getting too much for her. Lucy went out with her. She tells us that Stella feels guilty because Kenny pushed her out of the way of the car and that’s why he was killed. I hadn’t realised until now that he might have survived if he’d just stayed where he was instead of trying to intervene. Stella also seems to be having a bit of a crisis of confidence, wondering if there’s any point to her being a police officer when they can’t stop this sort of thing from happening. Altogether not a happy day.
And then there’s poor Gavin! Peter went round to see him this afternoon and found the house under siege from journalists. He called for Uniform to disperse them. Then, when he got inside, there was Gavin’s bossy older sister laying down the law about how everything ought to be done. Peter’s description of her made me glad I’m an only child! And Gavin’s so easy going and keen to please everyone that he won’t stand up for himself.
