It was with the greatest of difficulty that I managed to persuade Jonah that he wasn’t even to think about going into work this morning! Of course, he can’t go anywhere without one of us taking him, but that only increases his power of moral blackmail! He gave in in the end and spent the morning browsing the internet for anything and everything that he could find about Kenny’s past (in case the assault was a personal one rather than aimed at the police in general), previous cases involving attacks on the police and/or cannabis production or drugs offences more generally. He didn’t; find anything much and got ever more morose and irritable.
Then Peter brought Gavin and Chrissie round. Her school broke up yesterday so she as free to go with them to see the funeral director. They’re torn between having a really small family event and allowing all the people who might want to get involved to do their bit. It turns out Kenny was a scout leader and his troop will probably want to be on parade. Then the police force is bound to want to be represented. And dozens of neighbours have crawled out of the woodwork with cards and condolences and offers of help. We suggested that maybe they could persuade everyone to let them have a private funeral and then let them put on a service of remembrance that they could all contribute to later. Gavin and Chrissie are going to think about it, but, as Jonah says, thinking isn’t Gavin’s strong point and I’m not sure he won’t come back still undecided. The trouble is, he’s too concerned not to upset anyone.
Lucy arrive home late this evening. I offered to come up to Liverpool to fetch her in the car, but she insisted on coming by train. Of course, her first question when she got in was “how’s Stella?” followed quickly by “and what about Gavin?”
