Ibrahim's sister, Mariam, arrived today. Well, I suppose I ought really to say "Lucy's friend, Mariam" rather than talking as if she has no status of her own apart from her brother! It's just that we all got to know Ibrahim quite well when we were in Portugal a few years ago, so that's how I tend to think of her. I think I told you that Lucy, Cousin Dominic, Ibrahim and Mariam are all sharing a house in Liverpool during term time. It suits everyone: Dominic in order to get away from home without upsetting his mother; Ibrahim because the lease on his flat was up and this house is better than he could have afforded on his own, Mariam because her family will be pleased that she has Ibrahim to see that she's safe in a strange city away from home for the first time; and Lucy because it's cheaper than a student room and has better facilities than a Hall of Residence, including a small garden at the back.
Mariam says that she wants to be part of a proper traditional family Christmas. I'm not sure that we'll be able to oblige with that - we are such an eccentric lot! But we'll do our best. One thing she particularly wants to do is to come with us to midnight Mass at St Cyprian's; so Lucy's going to take her to see Father Damien tomorrow to let him know that he'll have a Muslim in his congregation. I'm sure he'll be delighted, but it's best that he knows not to expect her to take communion or to know the responses.
