Peter had his first session with Father Damien today. They talked about how it was that Peter stopped believing in God (which, contrary to what a lot of people assume, was nothing to do with Angie’s death) and about what happened to make him change his mind. I have to admit that I do struggle with the idea of Peter having had a personal encounter with the BVM, but on the other hand, if he didn’t, what on earth would make someone like Peter believe that he had met her? It’s not as if he’s a gullible, uneducated Portuguese peasant girl, is it?
Peter must have realised that I was thinking that sort of thing, because he told me about part of his conversation with FD. It went something like this.
Peter: Eddie reckons it all to do with my never having properly got over losing Angie; and Jonah says it’s because I never had a mother of my own. Thy both think it’s all down to me needing to find a mother-figure to fill a gap in my life.
Father Damien: Well, I think they may both be right.’
Peter (surprised): So you think I was imagining things too?
Father Damien: Not at all. I mean … well, do you not think that an all-knowing God, when He chooses to speak to you, would select the method to which you will be most open to listen? And under the circumstances (you having lost your wife in a tragic attack, never having had a mother’s love and fearing for the safety of your precious grandchild ) might that not have been to send His mother to have a word with you?’
