Peter spent most of the day with Gavin, who seems to have been completely poleaxed by Kenny’s death – not surprising really. His wife, Chrissie, is taking it very differently. She’s insisting on carrying on as normal and going into work. She teaches in a Special School to the north of Oxford and apparently told Gavin that she couldn’t take time off because she didn’t want to upset the children in the run-up to Christmas. I think she’s probably really wanting to keep busy so as to avoid thinking about things too much – and I don’t blame her.
Jonah was back in work today and he managed to persuade the Chief Super to put him in charge of investigating Kenny’s murder. Not much progress on that front – the one member of the gang that we managed to arrest is refusing even to tell us his name! The only things we have to go on are various items picked up by the forensics team at the scene and an abandoned car, which may or may not be the one that hit Kenny.
In another worrying development, Mariam rang Lucy this afternoon to tell her that her mother was verbally abused by a patient who demanded to be treated by a white doctor. It’s the first time they’ve experienced anything like this and they’re afraid it may be a reaction to the Conservative landslide in the election. Like the EU referendum, the racists seem to feel empowered by the result to say and do things that were socially unacceptable. I hope they’re wrong and it’s just a coincidence that it happened now.
