We had our usual packed programme of online services this morning. Then Father Damien came round for lunch and to wind down after his online Mass and telephone sacraments of reconciliation. He says that only a few of his parishioners ask for them, because most people either accept that confessing to a priest isn’t strictly necessary or think that absolution can only be done if the priest is physically present. One of the first things he did when he walked in the door was to announce that, even though it was Sunday he was off-duty and he could definitely NOT hear out confessions or celebrate mass with us because that wouldn’t be fair on the rest of his flock who aren’t in our bubble. We told him that we’d had precious little opportunity to commit any mortal sins in the last few weeks and Jonah topped that by saying that he had no intention ever of asking for absolution from any papish priest!
