We've had some bad news: Salma has developed a wound infection. That means that it'll be even longer before they can start any reconstructive surgery and there's more chance that she'll lose even more skin. Mariam is feeling guilty that she wasn't nearly as badly hurt as her friend. She knows that's irrational, but knowing doesn't stop her feeling it.
There wasn't much progress with finding out who did this to her either. Emily - the third girl who was affected by the acid - has a boyfriend who resents her reverting to Islam. That potentially gives him a motive, but there's no actual evidence against him and people who knew him say that he'd never do anything to hurt Emily. On the other hand, Emily claims that he's been stalking her, so ...
Two of our other suspects seem to have alibis - but rather weak ones - and two others have given alibis for one another. So, we still have a potential field of about half a dozen, although Sandra is convinced that the owner of the motorbike is guilty and he's lying about it havng been stolen.
Lucy tells me that some of the young men who go to Mariam's mosque are very angry about what happened, but Imran, the imam, is urging them to stay calm and let the police deal with finding who did it. It's probably a good thing that it's Ramadan, so everyone is thinking about focussing on God and doing good works. There are also lots of events being organised, such as a big open air Iftar (breaking of the fast) on the waterfront a week on Saturday.
Jonah and I are heading back to Oxford tomorrow morning. I can see that he's frustrated at not having been able to solve thr case before we left, and I have a strong suspicion that he won't give up trying to help from a distance!
