PC Andrew Harper's killers were sentenced today. The driver of the car that draggged him to his death got 16 years for manslaughter and his accomplices, who were in the car with him got 12 years. 16 years doesn't seem all that long, considering all the aggravating factors (non-co-operation with the enquiry, lack of remorse...) but on the other hand, the driver did plead guilty to manslaughter, which was probably taken as mitigation. You can read about it here.
It makes me wonder what will happen when Kenny Hughes' killers are brought to trial. Will this verdict encourage them to claim that it was manslaughter and not murder? They could easily try to make out that they never meant to hit him, never mind kill him. And I wonder what Gavin and Chrissie will put in their victim impact statement.
