18.7 Summary, References

Fundamental mechanisms of adhesive bonding are explained in terms of liquid–solid adhesion and surface wetting. Various types of adhesives and polymer surface modification techniques are described. Proper choice of adhesive and surface modification helps to increase the adhesion strength. Adhesively bonded polymers have successfully replaced various metallic components in automotive and aviation industries due to their lightweight and excellent properties. For high temperature applications, the adhesively bonded joints can be improved by the application of high temperature resistant adhesives and inclusion of nanofillers.
