Frank Wren
Frank Wren was a freelance National Hunt jockey whose name first appeared on a race card when partnering Free Borough in the Pitminster Hurdle at Taunton on February 10, 1938. He was unplaced behind even money favourite Samarkand, ridden by Ron Smyth.
He rode his first winner on 100/6 outsider Fantoche II in the Novices’ Hurdle at Stratford-on-Avon on March 17, 1938.
Frank lived at Furze Cottage, Dunthrop, near Chipping Norton and could ride at 9 stone 9 pounds. His career was interrupted by the war, during which he served six years with the Royal Armoured Corps.
He resumed riding in 1949 but with limited success, registering just one winner in each of the next three seasons. They were:
September 24, 1949: Corney Barry, Taunton, Corfe Selling Handicap HurdleOctober 10, 1950: Milord II, Fontwell Park, Storrington Selling Hurdle
April 14, 1952: Sir Cloggy, West Norfolk Hunt, Fakenham Hurdle.
His time in the Royal Armoured Corps had resulted in him putting on weight and he was no longer able to do 9st 9lb. When winning on Corney Barry at Taunton in 1949 he put up 2lb overweight at 10st 4lb. By the time of what was to prove his final win, at West Norfolk Hunt (Fakenham) on Easter Monday 1952 – evidently none the worse for a fall from C’Est Si Bon in the previous race – he had to put up 1lb overweight at 10st 8lb.
Frank rode for the last time on Wednesday March 11, 1953, when finishing unplaced on Jim’s Affair at Kempton.
