Ronald Boss, born on February 9, 1938, had a shorter riding career than most: having served his apprenticeship with Noel Murless, he rode as a professional from 1956 to 1969, accumulating 18 winners.
After a ten-year spell as head lad to Ifor Lewis, Welshman Ron took out a trainer's licence in 1972 and, sending out horses from Phoenix Lodge Stables in Rowley Drive, Newmarket, quickly found success.
Initial big races won included the 1977 Irish Oaks with Olwyn under Kipper Lynch, Queen Mary, Norfolk Stakes, Irish Sweeps Lincoln and the Lingfield Derby Trial.
In 1978, he landed the Lincoln with Captain's Wings, ridden by Michael Wigham. Ron backed his horse all the way down from its opening price of 50-1 to its starting price of 13/2.
His Head Lad was Robert Whitton.
He sent out his final runners in 1995.
