William Daniels, a professional jump jockey, rode twice in the Grand National.
Returning from a suspension in 1887, his first ride back was Gamecock, an eight year old gelding and 20/1 shot for the big race. A full report of his winning ride can be found on page 278 of Heroes and Heroines of the Grand National
The Sporting Life summary of the race may be read here.
Incredibly, the next day, Sunday 27 March, 1887, Gamecock was turned out again, this time for Aintree's Champion Steeplechase over three miles. Even more incredibly, Gamecock - carrying an extra two stones - won, the 11/10 favourite. Once again Daniels was in the saddle.
William Daniels made his second and last appearance in the National the very next year. Riding Old Joe, the 1886 winner, he failed to finish.
