John Leslie Hislop was born in Quetta, India, on December 12, 1911 and rode his first winner at Bungay on April 18, 1935.
He rode with much success under both rules, winning 100 races on the Flat and 48 over jumps.
He finished third in the 1947 Grand National on Kami.
His parents were Scottish.
He had a kidney removed: despite this, he served in the SAS and won the Military Cross.
After retiring, he became an owner, his most famous horse being Brigadier Gerard.
He was also a journalist.
John died on February 22, 1994.
His biggest wins came on Coubrador in the 1949 Coronation Hurdle & Cloncarrig in the 1948 Golden Miller Chase.
