Ernest Edward Morris was the father of D. W. Morris, the lightweight jockey who rode to such good effect in the 50s.
Born on June 24, 1905, Ernest was just 14 when he rode his first winner, Blacking, at Gatwick, on May 15, 1920 (left).
Ernest served his apprenticeship with Stanley Wootton at Epsom.
His riding weight was 8 st 4 lb and he was retained to ride work for Reg Day.
His best season came in 1921 when he won on 26 occasions.
His two best races won were the Rufford Abbey Handicap at Doncaster and the Royal Stakes at Epsom.
He lived at 36, Heath Terrace, Cheveley Road, Newmarket.
On August 9, 1926, he married Evelyn Frost: she gave him two sons, Derek William & John Edward.
