Frank Sharpe, who rode successfully as a lightweight jockey in the 1930s, has died at his Whitsbury home. He was 57.
Born at Brighton, Sharpe served his apprenticeship with Norman Scobie. In 1929, while still an apprentice, Sharpe rode 22 winners, including Medarlin (Prince Edward Handicap) and Grease Paint in the Great Yorkshire Handicap.
He won the 1931 Great Metropolitan on Summer Princess and the 1937 Wokingham on Kong, who later became the dam of Derby winner Nimbus and Grey Sovereign.
He rode his last winner on Sea-Shah at Beverley in the Elton Welter Handicap on June 14, 1951.
Frank died on Tuesday, 29 January 1963
