James Hogan was born at Rathkeale, Co Limerick, in 1888, and was apprenticed to Micheal Dawson at The Curragh.He rode many winners on the Flat in Ireland before becoming a jumps jockey. He finished third in the 1923 NH jockeys table with 61 winners.
James died on November 20, 1950, aged 62. His funeral was held at East Hendred.
He won the 1923 Welsh Grand National on Clonree, the 1922 Manchester Jubilee Hurdle on Fariray & the 1929 Lancashire Hurdle on Gipsy King
