Frederick William McKenna was born in Ireland on June 3, 1946: his father had married a Dutch girl and he was christened Fredorick Willem, but adopted English names.
He was apprenticed to P. Norris in Ireland for 3 years and rode his first winner, Carrigdown, at Roscommon on May 12, 1964. This was his first ever ride.
He also won on both his first rides over hurdles and fences.
Fred's greatest victory came at Cheltenham when he won the 1975 Triumph Hurdle on Royal Epic.
