William Michael Hayes was born in Bristol on June 28, 1941 and became apprenticed to Fred Armstrong.He rode his first winner, Bonhomie, at Royal Ascot (Ascot Stakes) on June 18th, 1957.
Michael 'Gabby' Hayes had ridden 130 winners when, on April 6, 1966, his sports car was in a collision at Cheveley, near Newmarket.
Aged 24, he was killed outright.
