Norman Stirk was the jockey on board outsider Rockavon when that horse won the 1961 2,000 Guineas.
Rockavon & Norman Stirk
His first winner had come at Newmarket on 21 August 1946.
Riding Las Vegas (left) for Scottish trainer Alexander Boyd, Norman won by a length and a half on the 9/2 second favourite.
In winning, Las Vegas became the first Scottish-trained horse to win at Newmarket.
There was no doubting that Newmarket was a very lucky track for Norman. In 1959, he booted home Rexequus in the Cambridgeshire.
Norman also won the Northumberland Plate.
A steady rather than prolific scorer, Norman's best season, numerically, came in 1959 with 29 winners.
Born at Billingham , Co Durham in 1929, Norman served his apprenticeship with Alexander Boyd, who sent out horses from his Tilton House Stables in Westbarns, Dunbar.
Aged 59, Norman (left) died in Dunbar on 14 September, 1988. He had ridden 252 winners.
