Allen McDonough was born in Co Galway, Ireland, and rode from an early age.
He won his first race, The Tipperary Hunt Cup, on his first ride over fences.
He came to England in the late 1830s and rode with great success. He regularly won on Brunette, Sir William and Cigar.
Allen, who habitually wore a black scarf when riding, died in Dublin on May 12 1888, aged 84.
His brother, William, won the 1840 St Alban's Chase on Vandyke.
