We first saw Ernest George 'Tim' Vinall on a racecourse on Saturday, April 28, 1923 when he partnered Damar into second place at Sandown.
Ernest quickly went one better, riding the same horse to victory at Lingfield a month later.
He rode as first jockey to Tom Rimell.Â
His biggest win, though, came for trainer H Turner on Bimco in the 1938 Imperial Cup at Sandown (after the stable jockey, R. Gough elected to ride The Dandy instead).
Another big race he won (twice) was the three mile National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham: in 1948 he rode 71/ shot Cavaliero to victory and, the next year, won on 20/1 outsider Frere Jacques ll.
By no means a prolific rider of winners, Ernest finished 5th in the jockeys' table in the 1948-49 season with 33 winners.
Ernest was born in Newhaven on 14 August, 1904 and lived at Annesley, Highland Road, Summersdale, Chichester.
He spent five years in the Royal Artillery, serving three years abroad.
Ernest often rode in India and France.
He died on September 13, 1974, aged 70.
