Lionel Gerald Brown was born on 25 March 1933 and lived at 41, Welham Road, Norton, Malton.He served his apprenticeship with George Colling and Ernie Davey and rode his first winner in 1950.
The best horses he rode included Goldhill, Cider Apple, Fleece, Three Wishes and Lochnager.
Big race wins included the Vaux Gold Tankard and theMagnet Cup.Â
His best season came in 1965 with 58 winners.
Having ridden over 500 winners, he retired from the saddle in 1976 and assisted his brother-in-law Jimmy Etherington in the running of a horsebox business at Malton.
On November 23, 1960, he married Miss Cook. She gave him two sons, Gerald (who became a jockey) and Richard Arthur, and one daughter, Susan Rose.
Lionel enjoyed a round of golf and a game of snooker.
Lionel was 5ft 3ins tall.
