Born on July 29, 1916, Edward was a Flat race jockey retained after WW2 by Newmarket trainer Squadron Leader Percy Allden at his Gondola Stables in Bury Road.
During the hostilities, Edward spent over five years in the Army Catering Corps. and lived at 1, Nursery Cottage, Queen Street, Newmarket.
His first win came in an Apprentices' Plate at Bath on Wednesday, 21 August, 1935, when he partnered 7/1 shot Caddle Combe to a six lengths victory (owned and trained by F. Pratt at Lambourn).
Caddle Combe carried just 6 st. 8 lb. After the war, Edward's riding weight had risen to 7 st 4 lb.
The best horse he rode was Esqumelling. Edward said that the highlight of his career had been beating Gordon Richards a short head in the Birmingham Stakes.
Edward rode many winners in India and the Channel Isles.
He rode for the last time on June 9, 1952 (Emperor's Dance, Catterick).
Edward Benneyworth died in 1996.
