Frank John Whittle was born in Leicester on March 8, 1937, and was apprenticed to Syd E. Warren. He stayed with this trainer until he quit racing in 1962 after becoming seriously ill with viral meningitis' He then spent three years working on the motorways.
He made his debut on Bright Lights (3rd) at Buckfastleigh on August 10, 1957: he landed his first winner on Grouse at Wincanton on September 14, 1957 (this was only his second ride in public).
He rode at one time for John Kempton, riding his final winner on Glory Stream. His last ride was on Our Tommy.
Frank rode a total of 43 winners.
His best win was on Perceves in the 1960 Tudor Rose Hurdle.
Whilst retired, he was hit by a drunken driver and received a cracked spine.
