Day Nigel
Londoner Nigel Day was born on January 10, 1960, and, having completed a five-year apprenticeship with Henry Cecil, rode as a full jockey for the first time in 1983.His first winner was Crack of Light at Doncaster on May 1, 1978.
He finished second with 35 winners to Bryn Crossley in the 1981 apprentice jockeys' championship.
The most winners he rode in a season was 39 (1990).
He rode until 2005. He had no winners in 2001 or 2002, two winners in 2003 and six winners in 2004.
Nigel's biggest win came on the well-drawn Clifton Fox, 14/1 winner of the 1996 Cambridgeshire for Jeremy Glover, who was winning the race for the fourth time. He also won the 1988 Stewards Cup on Rotherfields Grey, 1990 Champagne Stakes on Bog Trotter and the 1996 November Handicap on Clifton Fox.
Nigel, understandably, found it difficult to re-establish himself afterwards. He was still in the saddle in 1991 when, on Tuesday, September 10, he won the first two races at Lingfield.
He then gradually faded from the scene.
