1906 - 1949
Ian Robertson Alder lived at Orchard, Hawick, Scotland, and was a 9st 9lb National Hunt jockey who operated during the 30s and 40s.
He served six years in the Army (Gordon Highlanders) and four years in India & Burma (Major).
Attached to W. R. Bissil's stable, Cranmer House, Aslockton, Notts., Ian was desperately unlucky in the Grand National, coming second on MacMoffat in 1939 (to Workman) and second again on the same horse the following year (to Bogskar).
In 1938, Ian again came second on MacMoffat - this time in the Grand Sefton.
Born in Glendale, Northumberland, Ian's love of horses had been fostered at Dalystown Point-to-Point meeting where, as a lad in May, 1933, he rode Querist in the Carrolstown Cup Race.
He finished....second!
His first significant win as an amateur jockey came on Tuesday, April 17, 1934 when booting home Freetown by four lengths in the Uttoxeter Hunt Cup.
Ian's biggest win came in the Lancashire Chase in 1940 on Bachelor's Folly ll.
Sadly, Ian was killed in a car crash in Dublin, 9 June 1949. He was 42.
