James Cartwright was born on April 8, 1925 and served his apprenticeship with Captain Ossie Bell at Lambourn.
He took out a jump jockeys licence in the 1951/52 season but to wait until December 3, 1956 before riding his first winner, Fancy Point at Leicester on December 3. He added a second win at the end of that season on Shut Up at Market Rasen on May 11, 1957.
He took out a trainer’s licence in 1958, based in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, but continued to ride. He rode two more winners, both of which he also trained. They were:
Golden Monk, Towcester, May 16, 1959
Shahspeg, Market Rasen, September 26, 1959.
He continued to ride until 1966, his final two mounts being My Foresight and Venturesome Lover, both trained by him, at Doncaster on March 1, 1966. He relinquished his trainer’s licence the following year.
