Born in 1973, Michael rode briefly as a conditional jockey for Gary Moore before taking on the role of Head Lad at John Akehurst's.
His first ride came on Dandini on Monday, December 12, 1984.

He later turned to training, first at Nottingham, then at Lambourn.
By 2007 he was training at Tattenham Corner.
