Andrew Jim Wilson was born at Maidstone, Kent, on February 4, 1950, and rode his first winner, Advocate, at Powerstown Park (Clonmel) on August 27, 1970.
After Andrew's first birthday his parents took the family to live in Ireland. Here he started his riding career.
He rode 7 winners at the Cheltenham Festival, including the 1981 Gold Cup winner, Little Owl.
He also rode in 5 Grand Nationals.
Jim rode a total of 205 winners before retiring in 1985. Â Besides the Cheltenham Gold Cup, he also won the 1981 Peter Marsh Chase on Little Owl. Other big wins included the 1980 National Hunt Chase on Again The Same, the Coral Golden Hurdle three times on Willie Wumpkins (1979/80/81), the Kim Muir Chase twice on Good Prospect (1980) and Broomy Bank (1984), and Ascot's Heinz Chase in 1988 on Another Breeze.
He took up training, at Cheltenham. He learned his trade with David Nicholson.
